Why a Little Application of Exercise can go a Long Way
Hands up if you're happy with your body. And I don't mean those who you think their body is OK, on balance, I mean really, really happy. You know, the sort of happiness that comes with getting up in the morning, catching a glimpse of yourself in the mirror on the way to the shower and thinking - well, not thinking anything at all, to be honest.
Certainly not thinking "I wish I could lose that bit of cellulite on my bum" or "I wish I was taller" - you know the sort of thing.
Imagine, then, being Victoria Beckham and having the whole world weighing in with their opinions on whether you are too thin, too stupid, too extravagant, too obvious, whether your boobs are real or not and on and on.
Much capital is made of how she appears in public wearing very little, but as her recent appearance on the catwalk showed, she looks, well, well. Sure, she may be a bit on the thin side for many people's taste, but she looks healthy and seems to be developing a fine set of quads to rival her husband's.
She put her dramatic weight loss down to having a baby and doing lots of exercise. While I can't speak for the pregnancy bit - diet and exercise do work. I know that it's not a very glamourous solution for losing weight and which of us hasn't paused to read about the latest diet that promises to have us a shadow of our former selves in a fortnight, purely through taking their supplement and/or eating only cabbage, popcorn or bananas?
Now, we know these don't work - if there was a miracle diet that gave you all the nutrition you needed, plus toning your muscles and cardiovascular system at the same time, gyms would go out of business, loads of magazines would go bust and someone would be very, very rich.
I've been keeping a real close eye on my diet over the past six weeks, plus upping my aerobic sessions at the gym and, you know, it's actually paid off.
I haven't starved myself - why, I've even eaten biscuits - or thrown slimming supplements down my neck, or wrapped myself in clingfilm before running to sweat the pounds off. What's the point? It's not healthy and it doesn't do any good in the long run.
So not only am I looking a bit better, but with all those endorphins racing round my body from the extra exercise, I feel pretty good, too. The last time I wrote on this subject, I had an irate e-mail from a chap who asked me if I had ever been fat. Well no, I haven't, but the principle is the same whether you feel you are half a stone overweight or five.
Eating healthily and working more exercise into your life - even if you can only manage a five-minute walk to start - is the real key to looking good. And when you have thighs like Posh Spice, you'll wear skirts that short, too.
